6 Interview Questions to ask a Job Candidate.

3. How would you handle this situation?

Describe a scenario that requires the general skills required for the role you are interviewing for. Think of situations which have separated successful employees from unsuccessful in the past. For example, if interviewing for a customer service role, role-play a scenario in which a customer complains about receiving damaged goods or an incorrect order.

4. In five minutes, explain something to me that is complicated but you know well.

The something doesn't have to be related to the role, or even to work. It can be a hobby, a rule in sport, a cooking technique or something technical. The response will indicate how well your candidate comprehends complex subjects and their ability to articulate a complex subject to someone who doesn't know much about it. Candidates who are passionate and knowledgeable about something, and can convey that well, are more likely to be enthusiastic and influential at work.

5. Name one thing you would be happy to do every day for the remainder of your career.

This question will help uncover what makes a candidate happy at work. It is an effective gauge of whether they'd enjoy their role and remain with your company for a long time.

6. Tell me about a time you messed up.

This is a test for self-awareness. Employees who take responsibility for their screw-ups and learn from them are mindful and willing to grow. Those who blame others or invent ‘mistakes’ that sound too contrived should raise a red flag.
